But behind the curtain of this "AI boom," a chorus of experts, engineers, and researchers is urging caution. "There always has been this tendency to think that breakthroughs are closer than they really are," he explains. "People get disappointed and research funding stops, then it takes a decade to start up again."

This isn't the first time the world has been on the cusp of an AI revolution.

  • The 1960s: Early excitement around machine translation and artificial neural networks fizzled out when the technology failed to meet wildly optimistic expectations, leading to a significant drop in funding.

"There will be very few cases where you will be able to take the humans out of the loop," he asserts. "There will be many more cases where you cannot get rid of any humans in the loop." "I’ve never seen any successful approaches to incorporating AI to make any work better for anyone ever," she states candidly. "In my own experience, AI just means having to dig through more noise and detail. It’s not adding anything of real value."

Tulk Jesso argues that one of the biggest problems with AI in the workplace is that it's often designed in a vacuum, without a deep understanding of the jobs it's meant to improve. Instead of being a helpful tool, it becomes another layer of complexity for employees to manage.

Furthermore, the ethical concerns of generative AI are mounting and remain largely unresolved:

  • Copyright Infringement: Lawsuits are piling up over AI models being trained on copyrighted art, text, and images "scraped" from the internet without permission.

  • Environmental Impact: The immense computational power required to train and run large language models raises serious climate concerns about AI energy consumption.

"Steel is a design material. We test steel in a laboratory. We know the tensile strength and all kinds of details about that material," she says. "AI should be the same thing, but if we’re putting it into something based on a lot of assumptions, we’re not setting ourselves up for great success." Her point is clear: we need to understand why AI needs rigorous testing before we integrate it into the critical systems that run our society.


The Rise of the Cobots: Where AI is Already Succeeding


While skepticism is warranted in many areas, there are fields where AI is already delivering on its promise. In the world of advanced manufacturing, or Industry 4.0, the focus is on collaborative robotics, or "cobots." Associate Professor Christopher Greene researches how these systems can make life easier and processes more efficient.

"In layman’s terms," he says, "it’s about trying to make everybody’s life easier."

Unlike the caged-off, brute-force robots of old assembly lines, what are the benefits of collaborative robotics? Cobots are designed with advanced sensors to work safely side-by-side with human workers. This partnership combines the best of both worlds:

  • Robotic Precision: A robot can perform a task, like applying a precise amount of glue or tightening a screw to an exact torque, thousands of times without deviation.

  • Human Adaptability: A human worker can oversee the process, solve unexpected problems, and perform more complex, less-repetitive tasks.

This technology is already critical in fields where accuracy is paramount. Greene cites automated pharmacies, a key area of AI innovation in the healthcare supply chain. "Cobots are separating the pills, they’re putting them in bottles, they’re attaching labels and putting the caps on them," he explains. "All these steps have to be correct, or people die... If you correctly program a cobot to pick up that pill bottle, scan it and put it in a package, that cobot will never make a mistake."

In this context, AI isn't replacing the human; it's augmenting them, handling the repetitive and high-stakes precision tasks while humans program, maintain, and supervise the system.


The Black Box and the Bias: Unmasking AI's Hidden Flaws

For AI to truly earn our trust, especially in sensitive fields like medicine, we have to solve two of its most fundamental limitations: the "black box" problem and inherent bias.

Associate Professor Daehan Won, whose research bridges manufacturing and healthcare, emphasizes that AI's primary function should be as a tool for better decision-making. For example, how AI can help doctors detect cancer is a promising field, with algorithms capable of analyzing CT scans and MRIs to spot tumors.

But here lies the problem. Many advanced AI systems are a "black box." We can see the data that goes in and the answer that comes out, but the exact process of how the AI reached its conclusion remains a mystery. "When AI answers a question in the healthcare area, doctors ask: How did it come up with this answer?" Won says. "Without that kind of information, they cannot apply it to their patients’ diagnoses." Trust requires transparency, and the AI "black box" problem is a major barrier.

An even more insidious issue is how AI bias in healthcare data works. An AI is only as good as the data it's trained on. "There is a ton of research about AI being used for image processing to detect breast cancer," Won notes, "but from our review, most of that research is from developed countries like the U.S., the U.K. and Germany."

If an AI is trained primarily on data from one demographic, its accuracy plummets when applied to others. This creates a dangerous risk of health inequity. Won is actively working on projects to ensure that improving data diversity in AI medical research includes underrepresented populations, making the technology truly equitable. This same bias exists in manufacturing, where an AI trained in one factory may not work in another due to different machines or operator expertise. How to ensure AI is used responsibly starts with feeding it fair, unbiased, and representative data.


The Un-automatable Human: Why Big Decisions Still Need Us

Ultimately, across all these diverse fields, a single theme emerges: for the foreseeable future, humans are needed for big decisions. Professor Sangwon Yoon, whose work also spans manufacturing and healthcare, acknowledges AI's power to solve complex problems, but he stresses that public trust and the stakes of a decision dictate its limits.

A 2024 survey confirms this widespread apprehension, with a majority of people describing themselves as "cautious," "concerned," or "skeptical" about AI. This isn't just public opinion; it’s a practical reality. An algorithm might identify a potential tumor, but a human doctor communicates the diagnosis, discusses treatment options, and provides empathetic care. We can't talk to an AI in the same way.

"It’s the same with allowing AI to make military decisions," Yoon says. "This is why AI solutions right now are mainly used for things like social media and entertainment, because if it’s wrong, nobody gets harmed." Keeping humans in the loop with AI is not a temporary measure; it's a fundamental principle for responsible implementation.

Beyond the "Right Answer": The Quest for a Truly Creative AI

While much of the debate centers on the limitations of current AI, some researchers are already looking toward the next horizon. Distinguished Professor Hiroki Sayama works in "artificial life," a field that seeks not just to solve problems, but to create systems that exhibit the properties of life itself, like evolution and adaptation.

He points out a key difference: "Nearly all current AI and machine learning techniques are designed to converge on the best solution—the 'right answer'—at the fastest speed." Real biological systems, and human creativity, don't work like that. They explore, they experiment, they generate novelty indefinitely.

This has led to a fascinating new concept: what is open-endedness in artificial intelligence? It's the idea of creating AI that can continue to generate novel and surprising solutions on its own, without a fixed goal. This could be the key to unlocking true AI creativity, moving beyond rehashing existing data to generating genuinely new ideas.

Sayama worries that the current, convergent AI models could lead to a dangerous homogenization of thought. "Since everyone is using the same small set of AI tools, the outputs are becoming more and more similar," he warns. The next generation of AI must embrace diversity and open-ended exploration to be a truly beneficial force.

The journey into the future of AI is not a straight line. It's a complex landscape of incredible potential and significant peril. The consensus among those on the front lines of research is clear: AI is a profoundly powerful tool, but it is just that—a tool. Its ultimate value will be determined not by the sophistication of its algorithms, but by the wisdom, ethics, and critical thinking of the humans who wield it.
